Wacky Races!

What an action packed Sunday we had at Jersey’s first ever Soap Box Challenge – the sun shone, the crowds came out in force and the dare-devil competitors certainly put on a heroic display for us all.

There were of course plenty of thrills and spills, and lots of laughter as jumps were missed and risked but no serious harm was caused.

The fastest time recorded was a very impressive 34 seconds and the corporate entry of a Seaplane by The Ports of Jersey took pride of place on winner’s podium.

The fastest time for an individual was claimed by Nick Alison in his appropriately named Lincolnshire Lighting kart – he was close behind with a time of 36 seconds.

Our own entry The Flying Sparrow finished with a very respectable time of 37 seconds but was looking a little worse for wear at the end having lost its wings! You can visit our Facebook page to see it in full flight.

Barrette Plant Hire’s Sump Busters entry won the award for best Design and Construction of a kart and their engineering, design and innovation skills made them a very worthy winner.

The much applauded Best Themed Soap Box Award was won by the Wacky Races entry on behalf of Jason Thebault and Matt Falloon, aka Dastardly and Muttley. Not only were they in fancy dress and playing their characters out to the crowds too the kart was also fitted with sound effects. Judging by the cheering of the crowds each time they made an appearance it was the most popular entry of the day.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to Jersey Hospice Care and there were volunteers on hand gladly mingling with the crowds to ensure any kind donations were very gratefully received.

There are lots of photos and video footage available and excerpts from TV coverage too – it can all be found on the Jersey Soap Box Challenge Facebook page.

Our thanks go out to the organisers for bringing such a fabulously entertaining free family day to Jersey – we shall certainly put our thinking caps on to come up with another fun entry for next year.
