Are you prepared for plunging temperatures?

Jersey Met says temperatures are set to plunge over the coming days. It could feel as cold as -11°C by Sunday night, and snow is forecast for next week.

Preparations are being made across the island for icy road conditions, with sub-zero temperatures and the chance of snow forecast. We’re told salt spreading machines are at the ready, and ‘snow stations’ with equipment for parish workers are being put across town. So if these chilling temperatures and snow does hit our shores, Jersey would seem to be very prepared!

Does the same apply to you at home? You obviously don’t want to run out of heating oil on the coldest night of the year. If you allow this to happen we may take longer to deliver as demand will have increased and of course abnormal weather can delay deliveries of fuel to customers and, in extreme cases, prevent delivery vehicles getting through.

Aside from being cold, there are other reasons not to let your oil tank to get too low.

Allowing the oil level to fall too low can cause damage to your boiler. Monitor your fuel use by checking the depth of the fuel in the tank frequently in the winter months. Do be aware however that this can be a little deceptive owing to the rounded shape of most tanks.

It’s also a good idea to get a sense of how much fuel you  use. You might be surprised to see how much your fuel consumption increases during the winter, especially in particularly cold temperatures. Ensuring you have a sense of usage can help you to plan ahead and be prepared.

If you prefer you can rely on US to ensure that you have oil in your tank when you need it. By signing up for our planned delivery option – we automatically arrange the delivery. By doing this, it makes our deliveries more efficient, with any cost savings passed directly onto our customers. So it actually saves you money too.
